Comparative Essay

Cultural differences between Canada

Mina Shimomae

My home country is Japan, there is far from Canada, therefore there are many different things in lifestyle. For example, in Japan, the official language is only Japanese. On the other hand, in Canada, there are English and French, therefore, products that are sold in the stores are written in English and French. These are the main difference between Japan and Canada. There are many other differences. Comparing Japan and Canada, it is figured out that these countries’ culture is different cultural dimensions in terms of Masculinity, Uncertainty Avoidance, and Long-Term Orientation.

Comparing the cultural dimension of Canada and Japan, Japan has a Masculinity than Canada. The number of Japan’s Masculine percentage is 95%. This means that Japan has an image of a male who is strong and works hard every day. In Canada, on the other hand, the graph’s percentage is 52%. This number is neither high nor low, however, it describes that Canada has a neutral idea of Masculine and Feminine.

Japan has High Uncertainly Avoidance than Canada. In terms of society, this means that Japan is conservatism. Therefore, they disagree with innovation in society and politics and follow law and order. In Canada, while, people agree with new innovations or policies. This explains Canada’s ideas of diversity in gender and race.

Japan has a Long-Term Orientation than Canada. This cultural dimension is the biggest difference between Japan and Canada. This means that people in Japan focus on their future and work hard to earn money for their old age. Meanwhile, in Canada, people focus on the present or the past. They work hard to spend good life now and they hope for immediate happiness.

Japan and Canada are countries across the Pacific Ocean, and their topography and size are different. Therefore, lifestyle, food, and characteristics are also different. Between Japan and Canada, not only lifestyle differences but also exist cultural dimension differences in each country. Japan is Masculinity, therefore people think males have power and leadership in their work, while, in Canada, people think gender positions are equal for males and females. In addition to this, Japan has High Uncertainly Avoidance and Long-Term Orientation. People want to live happier until old age, therefore they are afraid of changes and try to keep the same regulations or laws. On the other hand, in Canada, people accept new thoughts or society, therefore, they bring reforms in society. Canada has a Short-Term Orientation, so people accept these things and they want to make the present or past better.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I’m excited to apply for the travel counselor position at your company as advertised on indeed. I believe my skills in language and patience are a good fit for this position and will provide an advantage to your company.

As a manager of the basketball club at high school, I supported the players of the basketball club for two years. I was responsible for keeping score during the game. After that, I worked at a café for half a year as a part-time job and was responsible as a waiter and clerk. I continued club activity first to the end.

When I first started this part-time job, I did not know about nice sightseeing places near my part-time job place, so I took the initiative to look up some nice places on the internet and I introduced this information to customers. When I go on a trip, I search for useful information about the place on the internet. Therefore, I like to search for information and make an effective plan. I believe that these skills are useful to suggest to customers to meeting with you to learn.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to learning about the travel counselor position. I can be reached at 250-318-6705. Thank you for your consideration.
